Famous Pianists Advice
Federico Coll: Pianist magazine no 77: Here we have an example of a pianist who really does have his head in the clouds! His advice to an amateur (note: an amateur; not a pro) is to spend a "lot of time in front of your soul"; also to "be sad". I kid you not. Imagine saying that to a 10 year old kid.....
Pavel Kolesnikov (Pianist no 103 - 2018)
"Record Yourself. Once you get used to it, you can have a much better understanding, of what you are doing and you can improve much more quickly."
Now thats not bad advice - I say it to pupils who have passed grade 1 and above. Not everyone listens to me; but that sums up teaching....
I have actually produced a short video on the advantages of recording one's own playing. It is NOT REALLY about pursuing a recording career. The vast majority of my pupils will never get near that heady height of success. However as Paul says above it is very useful very assessing your own playing.
